I was contemplating a self-portrait and had to do some hard thinking about what my ‘self’ really is.

Surely it isn’t my face, because if that were the case, I would have lost my ‘self’ a long time ago!

No one is just one thing... each of us is a combination of many parts, some we like and some we don't. 

I decided to represent one of the unchanging parts of me. The question then became how to represent that essence in visual form.
